Sir Hugh S. Roberton

Roberton was a Scottish composer and Britain's leading choral-master. He was a pacifist and his Glasgow choir was therefore banned from singing on the BBC during the second world war. 

He is the composer of the English lyrics and in some cases tunes to a number of songs popularly considered to be traditional songs.
