About the Song

The song was apparently written in the early fall of 1963 - intended specifically as an anthem for the protest movements of the 1960's. It was written and recorded shortly before the assasination of President John F. Kennedy in November 1963. It was released on as the title track of his second album in January 1964.

The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band assembled a multi-artist cover of the song in 2021 as a fund-raiser for Feeding America that included Steve Earle, Roseanne Cash and other artists.
