About the Song

Print source:
Sing Out 38:3

This song was written by British musician, Labi Siffre, son of Nigerian and Belgian parents. He wrote this song in 1984 after watching a documentary on apartheid in South Africa showing soldiers killing civilians protesting in the streets. As a gay man it was impossible for Siffre to live or work in Africa including Nigeria where his father grew up. The song is an anthem for all people struggling to keep their strength and hope alive in the face of injustice and repression.
