About the Song
This song was written in 1929 & debuted in the MGM film "Hollywood Revue of 1929" - a feature length series of variety acts that included many of the best known stars of the day including Jack Benny, Lionel Barrymore, Anita Page & Buster Keaton. Cliff Richard sang it first as "Ukelele Luke" & the entire cast sang it again at the end of the film.
It was recorded in that year by Nick Lucas & many others.
Gene Kelly memorably danced to the song while splashing through puddles during a rainstorm in the 1952 romantic musical film "Singin' in the Rain".
Dean Martin tried to sing the song during a 1950 episode of the variety TV show "The Colgate Comedy Hour". He performs it while being drenched in water by comedy partner and co-host Jerry Lewis.
Bing Crosby & Rosemary Clooney sing it as a duet on his radio show in 1961.
