- The song was written especially for the musical film Sun Valley Serenade featuring the Glen Miller Orchestra. Although the song was recorded for the film with John Payne and Pat Friday (the latter being dubbed in), the earliest recording of the song, it was cut from the film prior to release. The track was later released on recordings.
- The song was again recorded for the 2nd Glen Millers film Orchestra Wives in 1943, this time featuring Ray Eberle with Friday.
- The song was released by Etta James as the title track of her 1960 debut album on Argot Records. It became her signature song and her recording is generally considered the greatest cover of the song.
- Ella Fitzgerald recorded the song with guitarist Joe Pass on her 1983 Speak Love album.
- Celine Dion on her 2002 A New Day Has Come album.
- Beyonce recorded the song on the soundtrack album of the 2008 film Cadillac Records. She sang the song for Michelle & Barack Obama as their first dance at the Neigborhood Ball for Obama's 2012 inauguration as president.
