About the Song

Written (reportedly on the same day she wrote "I Will Always Love You") and recorded in 1973 in the RCA studios in Nashville. Released as both a single and as the title track of an album that year.

She says that she wrote the song about a bank teller in Nashville who was having an affair with Parton's husband while she was touring. The results were not pretty! She says that she chose the name from a fan with red hair who sought an autograph at one of her concerts.
