About the Song
This song was first released on Taylor's 1968 debut self-titled album "James Taylor".
Taylor was signed as the first artist other than The Beatles to sign a record contract with the Beatles' Apple Records label. He says he wrote it while feeling homesick for the state he grow up in while he was recording in England for the Beatles & Apple Records.
The song was recorded in 1968 at Trident Studio in London, the most advanced studio in England at the time. The song's lyric "holy host of others standing around me" makes reference to the Beatles, who were recording their "The Beatles" in the same studio where Taylor was recording his album.
