About the Song
The battle for a healthy work week was a major focus of union organizing around the world. Carpenters truck in 1791 in Philadelphia for a 10 hour day. A number of general strikes were held in the U.S. in the late 19th century for an eight hour day. Although the 1937 Fair Labor Standards Act established a 40 hour work week, it only applied to about 20% of workers.
Categorizing workers as contractors, forcing workers to work part-time at several places of work (as happened for many college teachers), forced overtime, and recategorizing employees as management are some of the many ways that highlight the continuing challenges to a 40 hour work week today!
