This song was first recorded by MacColl with his partner Peggy Seeger for their 1960 "The New Briton Gazette Vol.1" LP.

It is known primarily for Phil Ochs' cover on his iconic "I Ain't Marching Anymore" LP in 1965 on Elektra Records.

Woody Guthrie wrote a similar song "Jesus Christ" about Jesus as an organizer of the poor & workingclass, framed and murderded by the rich & powerful of his day.
